Byetone (Olaf Bender) is together with Carsten Nicolai and Frank Bretschneider co-founder and curator of the German electronic label raster-noton, one of the most important labels of contemporary electronic music over the last two decades, which in the world of electronic music established its unique musical and visual aesthetics on the border between acoustic and electronic (digital) audio signal, image and object (via the formation of minimalist sculpture, installations, audio-visual connections, …), which echoes both in the galleries and museums of contemporary art in clubs with dance music and in major concert halls. Raster-noton’s aesthetics is rooted in the historical branch of minimalism, not only in music but also in contemporary art. At the same time this experience fits into a modern minimalism milliue of techno music, sound and audio-visual arts in the realm of sound interventions, minimalist sculptures and installations. Olaf Bender, Carsten Nicolai, Frank Bretschneider and their many companions (Ryoji Ikeda, Emptyset, Kandging Ray, …) woved conceptualism into a space of popular culture and trasnformed audio experience into a pulse, rhythm and signal, which is converted into a digital environment information and image. The work of Olaf Bender, acting under the name Byetone is characterized by abstract glitch electronics and more recently, minimal techno. With the last album Symeta he received numerous praise of critics and admirers. Another aspect of his music, in particular its live performanceis it’s of visual nature. It is an open platform based on the correlation of sound and image, and their complementarity. www.raster-noton.net Video: www.youtube.com/watch

Schrauff is keeping it real with his long running techno and electro net-label Bio-Mechanics and firm Elements night series. He’s got his hands full hosting weekly electronica radio show X Machina at Radio Študent and indulging in nostalgic italo disco, synth pop, acid house …

Elisabeth Schimana uses live electronic and acoustic elements. Project Skin Body consists sonically of “broken” rhythms, constantly oscillating membranes and diverse modulated levels of generated sound patterns, which the artist produces by playing the cello and electronic instruments. A sonic treat for bodily music tasting.

noid – his musical approach can be described as fundamental research and his works span a wide range of contradictory outcome, from solos to compositions for ensembles, from sound installations to videos. He uses electronics as well as acoustical instruments, consequently denying the borderline between music and sound-art.

Participants of this themed panel discussion will present their own practices and personal research in the field of sound art and musical experimentation – new interfaces, ways of documenting sound, transformations of non-sonic records into sonic, and expanding the ability of sound stimuli perception. An important component of the panel – apart from authorial poetics – will also be the open code principle and free access to copyright works and knowledge, which are the common thread of this year’s festival.

The Q:aRt project serves as the MFRU-KIBLIX preview event, offering information to the general public about the festival’s objectives and content through the means of generated codes, designed to redirect application users to a website which provides information about the festival. Thus, the project is investigating not only the potential of QR codes in informing the public, but also the potential contained in various city locations, spatial points and nodes to serve as informants via QR codes.

Tomaž Grušovnik is a philosopher, publicist and fine artist. He is the author of a scientific monograph entitled “Shades of Green”, a Fulbright grantee, a visiting professor at the University of Oslo and the “Messenger of Science 2012” prize winner.

Tina Merica is a landscape architect from Murska Sobota, whose creative activities cover an array of areas of the urban culture; she organizes music and visual events, conducts workshops and dedicates most of her time to cultural-artistic space interventions.

Neža Mekota is in her final year of studies at the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Biotechnical Faculty of Ljubljana’s University; she is currently writing her final thesis on “Reconstruction of Baroque park Turnišče near Ptuj”.

Gjino Šutić, Monika Pocrnjić, Žiga Kranjec, Robertina Šebjanič, Luka Frelih

Panel guests will be discussing the key role of workshops and the workshopology principle inside contemporary interdisciplinary art practices. Workshopology stands for the open code principle of sharing artistic, technical and scientific knowledge on the basis of transdisciplinary workshops, which cleverly interweave aspects of theory and practice. They open new channels for creativity and at the same time enable the public to become a part of processes that used to belong to closed scientific or artistic spheres.
